A scholarly journal is a publication created by scholars to report on new, original research in a discipline. Journals come out periodically - once a month, once a year, every three months, ect. Every article in a journal will typically deal with one topic - for example a single experiment or analysis of a text. In order to be considered scholarly, the articles must go through a peer-review process where experts in the field review the research to ensure that the research methods used are appropriate for that field.
It is essential to remember that while peer-reviewed articles receive more thorough vetting than any other source you can consult, their results may not tell the entire story about a topic. Many fields do not consider a point to have been proven until many researchers have replicated the results of an article, and articles are often part of a conversation among scholars on a topic. You will not often find a general introduction to a topic in a scholarly journal article - for that you should consult a book or a reference source.
If you have an article citation, you can use the Journal List to see if Farley library has the journal. Just type the journal title in the search box and click search. If it is available, the journal title will appear along with a list of databases that it is accessible in. Note the date ranges as these will determine if the specific issue of the journal is available

Summon searches all library materials appropriate to college-level research simultaneously and ranks the results by relevance to your search terms. We call this type of research a "discovery search." Rather than repeating your search in several library databases for articles and the library catalog for books, you can do one search in Summon and receive results for all the articles, books, newspapers, reference sources, and more that we have on your topic. Whenever available, full text links appear on the search results page. Have questions about how to use Summon? A librarian will be happy to answer.
