Indigenous History

We acknowledge and honor the Indigenous peoples who have been stewards of the land in northeastern Pennsylvania. The Susquehannock, also known as Conestoga, lived along the Susquehanna River in northeastern and central Pennsylvania. After decades of disease and warfare decimating their population, the surviving Susquehannock died by massacre in 1763. The Lenape lived in Delaware, New Jersey, southern New York, and eastern Pennsylvania. Some Lenape people remain in their historic homelands. Many more were forcibly removed and relocated to Oklahoma, where they are known as the Delaware Tribe of Indians, and Ontario, Canada.

November is Native American Heritage Month. This month and every month we celebrate the history, experiences, and contributions of Native American people. On this list you'll find scholarly books, essays, novels, and poetry.
