What are research metrics?

Research metrics are quantitative measurements used to assess the impact and quality of research outputs.

There are three main types of research metrics:

Keep in mind that no one metric gives the whole picture and that each metric has pros and cons; therefore, it is important to consider multiple metrics when assessing a piece of research.

The following sections will discuss different research metrics. This is not an exhaustive list of all the research metrics available.
