Linking to Electronic Resources

Off-Campus Links

Farley Library resources are only available only Wilkes University faculty, students, and staff. An off-campus link is a proxied resource link that allows users to access electronic library materials from off campus. Users must authenticate through Wilkes by logging into the proxy server prior to accessing library resources or the resource provider will deny access or request payment for resources. Using proxy links will ensure users can access library materials wherever they are located.

Questions about or assistance with creating proxied links can be directed to Gina Cherundolo, Electronic Resources Librarian.

How do proxied links work?

Library resource providers use a computer's IP address to determine if a user is associated with a subscribing university. The library has given each of our database providers a range of IP addresses that belong to Wilkes computers and servers. Any IP address that falls outside of this range will not be recognized by the resource provider, and therefore, no content will be available to the users. By signing into the proxy server, a user is assigned a Wilkes IP address and electronic library materials will become available to them.

What does a proxied link look like?

A proxied link will always begin with the Wilkes University proxy server prefix, followed by the resource's permalink. See the Permalink tab for instructions on where to locate permalinks in Farley Library resources.

How do I create a proxied link?

  1. Begin by finding the permalink for the resource you would like to link to. Instructions for finding permalinks can be found on the Permalink tab.
  2. Paste the permalink into a document, webpage, or e-mail.
  3. Copy the proxy prefix and paste it in front of the permalink. There should be no space before or after the equal sign.

Examples:

Only sites which have been registered in the proxy server will work through this process. If you receive errors after creating a proxied link, contact Gina Cherundolo, Electronic Resources Librarian, for assistance. Please provide the resource URL to which you are trying to link within your message.

What happens to users on campus who access library materials through proxied links?

Users on campus will be linked directly to the resource. The proxied link will direct the computer to the proxy server which will recognize a Wilkes IP address and pass the computer on to the resource without displaying a login page. Users on campus frequently click proxied links without disruption, such as links on library research guides and the Databases & Indexes list.
